Embrace The “Milky Bun” Mouth Wide Open

IMG_0144My stomach and I have a food problem. We drove 50 miles (100 round trip) to indulge in a warm donut stuffed with milk & cereal flavored ice cream. Sounds and looks amazing, right?

IMG_0145Two to three years ago, Ryan Seacrest mentioned Afters Ice Cream (home of the Milky Bun) during his morning show. As soon as I arrived at work I googled “milky bun” and found it in Fountain Valley, a city in Orange County, CA. It took a while, but I proudly made stomach space and embraced the Milky Bun mouth wide open.

IMG_0121Unfortunately, my eyes are bigger than my belly. Churro and cookie butter flavored ice cream made it in my mouth before deciding on milk & cereal. Those are only a few of the crazy flavors offered. Half of the Milky Bun fit in my food storage space before it became full. Apple has not figured out how to transport food to the cloud. Next time, I need a Milky Bun partner to do halfsies.

Long List, Short Order…

‘Restaurants to Visit’ is a collection of places to grub. When I  see or receive a recommendation of a place with potential to make my mouth water, I add it to the ‘Restaurants to Visit’ list in my phone.

One of my best friends told me to choose a restaurant and she would treat me to a late birthday dinner… I would usually go to my restaurant list, but I accidentally ERASED IT! Ugh! It took forever, but I decided to dine at Short Order.

We went during dineLA Restaurant Week and ordered from the prix fixe menu (see below). I ordered the items pictured above (circled on the menu). We did halfsies with the meat, so I got to try the flat iron steak too.

Dante’s  moist, tender, well-seasoned fried chicken eclipsed the steak. The warm, gooey, lightly breaded mac n’ cheese was yummy. My order came with Short Order spuds and a fresh standard side salad. I forced myself to stop eating, so that I could save room for a vanilla shake… apparently shakes were in high demand because they ran out of ice cream after us. Nothing disappointed, but a few items (Dante’s Fried Chicken,  the mac ‘n’ cheese and vanilla shake)  were extra tasty.

Hot Bodies Are…

Most people have always assumed that i’m in good shape because of my petite frame. Truth is, I have a great metabolism that allowed me to fool people. A year and a half ago you couldn’t get me to run a mile, i’d be out of breath by the end of the second block. Over the past few years, i’ve realized that hot bodies are healthy bodies.

Exercising and eating right go hand in hand. When I eat healthy and exercise I notice that I have more energy, focus and I feel better. Last September, I ran and finished my first official run (10K/6.2 miles) in 1:14. I was able to do that because I decided to make better health and fitness choices. Don’t just take my word. Let’s see what someone else has to say about it.

Below are pictures of Ozzie, a health coach, who I’ve watched make a transformation from the picture on the left to the picture on the right. Check out the Q & A session to find out what he thinks about health and fitness.

Q & A with Ozzie

Describe yourself in one sentence.

Ozzie: I am a thankful individual that runs on the never ending fuel of life’s positivity and beautiful moments.

How often do you exercise?

Ozzie: I workout between 3 to 5 times a week.

What do you wish you knew 5 years ago that you know now?

Ozzie: I wish I knew that eating the right foods and focusing on proper nutrition would get me way better health results than working out 5 to 6 times a week for hours at a time in the gym.

Some people think that health and fitness aren’t really important. What would you say to them?

Ozzie: You only have one body.  If you don’t take care of it now, it’ll take care of you later.  Make the right investment for the long term, you won’t regret it.

Is there anything else you want to share about yourself, health or fitness?

Ozzie: Being healthy and fit isn’t always about how you look.  It’s also about how you feel on the inside. I do a lot of reading and personal development, and because of how much it’s helped me to grow mentally, I don’t feel there is anything I can’t do or achieve once I put my mind to it.

Farewell, Grand Lux Cafe

Grand Lux Cafe, Los Angeles opened its doors to customers for the last time on March 19.  A couple good peeps and I visited on March 15 to say our final farewell.

My first visit in 2004/2005 with a party of about 20 people is a blur, but I remember tasting three dishes that all seemed very bland. Honestly, the only reason I went on March 15  is because my friend suggested it. This was my second visit. I ordered the Cedar Planked B.B.Q. Salmon, i’m still not sold on the food. On the other hand, I would go back just for the fresh baked box of cookies.

The price of our entrees ranged from $19-$23 and the servings were pretty big. All in all, the experience was favorable and our server was great.

Have you dined at Grand Lux? If so, what is your experience?

Below are pictures of our food and drinks followed by details.

Unofficial Birthday Dinner

Today is my birthday, yay!!! Ask me how old I am and I will say 21… that is my story and I am sticking with it.

The photos below are of last night’s dinner at  Little Next Door (not to be confused with Little Door), which is literally next door.

Pictured are the Top Sirloin Cap Steak (Café de Paris butter, vegetable medley with pommes frites, $22), Coque au Vin (Braised Mary’s chicken in red wine sauce with bacon, pearl onions and mushrooms with fettucine, $20), and the creamy deliciousness that is called crème brûlée (my favorite dessert, $6).

Nom, nom, nom! Did I say nom?

Open Sesame

Last night, I enjoyed Lebanese cuisine at Open Sesame in Manhattan Beach. I thoroughly enjoyed the Chicken Tawook dish during my visit at the Long Beach (Belmont Shore #2) location, so I ordered it again. Next time, l will attempt to branch out.

My experiences at both locations have been favorable. The food is yummy, service is friendly and atmosphere is great. Below are meal deets.

CHICKEN TAWOOK $16.49 ($14.99 without rice)
Skewered cubes of marinated, charbroiled chicken breast, served on a bed of basmati rice with hummus, garlic sauce, pita and a choice of salad (Open Sesame salad pictured above).

LAMB KABOB $21.99
Skewered cubes of seasoned lamb, charbroiled and served on a bed of basmati rice with hummus or baba ghannouj, pita and a choice of salad (Open Sesame salad pictured above).
