Awesome #EverydayWomen That Look Like Me

Awesome everyday women that look like me are too often unseen, therefore we think they are non-existent. I began the #EverydayWomen series to help dispel this myth and spotlight a few women that inspire me. On Instagram, I announced that I would run the series via Facebook from Nov. 25 – Dec. 25, 2014. The series would feature images of 30 awesome everyday women. Instead of 30, there are 31 everyday women featured and the series extended through January 1, 2015.

Science, technology, finance, arts/entertainment, government, health/beauty, military, and fashion are some of the career fields these women dabble in. Like countless women, most of these ladies wear multiple hats. While juggling the demands of their careers, several of these women are wives and/or mothers too.

#UltimateCurlboxMeetup at St. Jude’s Give Thanks Walk

When I lift my legs, I expect one foot to move in front of the other. Walking is just as natural as breathing and I have been doing it for twenty-something years. Being unable to walk is unfathomable to me. As I walked/ran at St. Jude’s #givethankswalk I took time to appreciate how blessed I am.

10802854_681749248598870_1601233490_nSt. Jude caters to children suffering from cancer and catastrophic diseases, it’s a pediatric treatment and research facility. Curlbox is a natural hair subscription service that allows curly girls to discover new products every month, for a fraction of the retail cost. St. Jude and Curlbox partnered to created the Ultimate Curlbox Meetup at St. Jude’s Give Thanks Walk.

Scrolling through my Instagram timeline I stumbled across the image promoting the event and jumped on the opportunity. Raising awareness of such a worthy cause, exercising and meeting new curl friends? Win, win and win!

IMG_0987The 5K walk went through Paramount Pictures studios. Three laps around equaled 5K. Since I have so much to be thankful for, I completed two extra laps. The last lap included multiple dance breaks with team captain Nikia and her friend Alexis (not sure if the spelling is correct), so awesome! Seeing so many curlies out there made me smile real big.

All Los Angeles Ultimate Curlbox Meetup participants received swags bags filled with these Carol’s Daughter goodies. Score! Curlbox raised more than $17,000 for the cause and united multiple groups of women together all across the country. AMAZING!

Am-ster-DAMN!

IMG_0582From Germany, we headed to  Amsterdam, Netherlands via train intending to sleep during the five-hour ride. We were lucky enough to NOT have seats because the powers that be overbooked the train. We sat on the floor and attempted to sleep in our laps. Tiare and I were not successful. Augi, the sleep master, enjoyed a little shut eye.

On our second night in Amsterdam, I suffered a baby heart attack because I accidentally deleted about 300 vacay pictures. I digress.

We took a boat tour through the canals, explored the city by foot, shopped (not until we dropped), and filled our bellies.  Oh! And I recovered a some deleted pics. All in all, we had a great silly time in Amsterdam.

Being A Boss In Menswear-Inspired Shoes

IMG_9102

“Give a girl the right pair of shoes and she can conquer the world.” -Marilyn Monroe

Boss is the first word that comes to mind when I slide my feet in these menswear-inspired loafers. I kick ass and take names. Do I feel this way because I can work in them all day without worrying about my feet hurting? Not sure, but  the average flats do not have the same effect. The surge of power is cray… I feel as if I can conquer the world in them while wearing a Pampers Swaddler and Gerber onesie.

#Nike Training Club Tour – Los Angeles

Nike Training Club (NTC) Tour Los Angeles proved to be worth every bit of the $75 registration fee that I did not pay. All registered participants received a rose gold Nike Fuel Band ($169 retail value), so we were already winning. The winning streak continued… three guided workout sessions, fitness talks with professionals, manicures (nail shaping, polish and nail art), a braid bar, lunch, healthy snacks, and swag bags filled with goodies were also included. Yes, all for $75! Nike knows how to treat a girl.

Sophisticated Box Braid Updo (Bunning it up)

Braids have been in heavy rotation, because I decided to grow my tapered cut out (I want my hair back!).  Awkwardness of the awkward-length stage is more awkward when your hair is uneven, so braids have been my crutch.

Growing up, I believed that braids were not appropriate for sophisticated occasions, but it’s all in how you style them.  I attended a few events that required a fancy upgrade from the basic everyday top bun I wore.

The video above by Jennifer Olaleye inspired the braided bun i’m rocking below on the left. I added my own twist to the style by crossing a few braids from each side and clamping them with a thin metal barrette. Instead of wrapping the ponytail with hair (as shown in the tutorial), I used a hair tie for a more secure ponytail. I also used a rubber band to secure the final bun and a few bobby pins to hold the bun in place. Pictured on the right is an alternative to the braided bun, I created a regular bun by wrapping the hair in a circle, then pinned it in place.

Make sure that your braids are not pulling your hair, especially around the edges. Loosen hair as needed to stay alopecia free.

Why is The Wolf of Wall Street 3hrs Long?

3e67637a692911e380c90e1e8d916dc5_8

Three hour movies are definitely not my cup of tea. Why? I become a kid, get figity and attention deficit disorder (ADD) kicks in.  The world is moving while I am sitting in a theater for three hours unable to multi-task. God forbid the movie sucks, I can never get that time back.

I received an invite to a screening of The Wolf of Wall Street and my eyes conveniently skipped over the three hour run time, so I attended.

Watching men let money, power and greed drive them cuckoo is quite entertaining. The Wolf of Wall Street is a reminder to stay humble. Although it held my attention, three hours were not required.

Women Rock: Mara Brock Akil

6th Annual Essence Black Women in Hollywood luncheon held at the Beverly Hills hotel

Who is Mara Brock Akil?

Mara puts pen to paper and creates real people who share (via television and film) authentic experiences we face in this thing called life. Girlfriends, The Game, Cougar Town, Sparkle, South Central, The Jamie Foxx Show, and Moesha… Mara’s had a hand in them all. Check her resume, she rocks!

Girlfriends, the first show created by Mara, is one of my all-time faves. It was so good that I had to buy boxed sets. I’m anxiously awaiting her new series Being Mary Jane, which debuts in 2014 and stars Gabrielle Union.

Mara captures the complex lives of individuals (esp. African American women) and serves them up on a plate of awesome with the help of her diverse team. That team includes her husband/partner Salim Akil.

You know they’re the bosses over at Akil Productions (formerly Happy Camper Productions), right? Let’s say it together: Power couple!

Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of spending time with Mara and Salim as they honestly (not Hollywood honest) uncovered their relationship in a panel at the BET Experience. They shared how they keep their marriage in tact and manage their business relationship.

Aside from dynamic partner and skilled writer, Mara also proudly hold the titles; successful producer, devoted wife and nurturing mother. From where I stand, she does it all with style and grace.

Mara is an ah-MAy-zing Los Angeles born, Kansas City raised individual rocking the world. She earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University. Unlike Dorothy and Toto, Mara worked hard to create the life she lives, she didn’t just click her heels.

Fun Fact: (Cue Kanye West’s Through The Wire) She’s a Delta, so she’s been throwing up that dynasty sign.
