The Street Food Cinema experience travels throughout Los Angeles this summer from May 25-August 31 providing an awesome summer fun destination that includes movies, live music and food trucks.

On June 20, Mean Girls was projected on the SFC (40 feet wide by 22 feet high) screen at Poinsettia Park and I attended.

Before the movie, guests rocked to Elle Rae while mingling and standing in vendor and food truck lines. I grabbed mini donuts from The Fry Girl truck, then firecracker wings and bomb dust fries from the Belly BombZ truck.

The mini donuts and bomb dust fries were tasty, but the firecracker wings did not evoke sparks. I waited about an hour in the Belly BombZ line, the wings were not worth it and prices were deceptively raised.

Enough about that, guests competed in a Mean Girls Look Alike/Sound Alike contest to win a 76 gas card and a gift bag of goodies, it was pretty entertaining. Two thumbs up for the Street Food Cinema experience.

Next time, I plan to take advantage of outside food and beverages being permitted. A nice glass of wine with a movie? Why not!

For more information and to view the schedule, visit Street Food Cinema. I hear that free tickets are given away to @stfoodcinema followers on Twitter and Instagram.

As always, thanks for reading and feel free to ask questions. xoxo

Tyler Perry’s The Haves & the Have Nots and Love Thy Neighbor

Fascinated with BFFs Tyler Perry and Oprah’s new partnership, I’ve patiently waited to check out the new projects on OWN.

Last week, I attended the press party for both series. The event, held at SLS Beverly Hills, featured brief teasers and a Q & A session with cast members. Forthcoming with behind the scenes deets, the casts seemed genuinely excited about their respective shows, so I eagerly awaited the air dates.

Yesterday, I watched the first two episodes of both shows and i’m ready to share my thoughts.

The Haves and the Have Nots is both Tyler and Oprah’s first drama. The premiere episodes definitely brought a boat load of drama. The issues are real and relevant, but there is a soap opera feel to the show.

At the press party cast members emphasized how this drama is much different from soaps that they previously worked on. As a viewer, that boundary is not so clear. I’m curious to see how the show progresses.

As for the comedy,  Love Thy Neighbor, it is the signature Tyler Perry that fans have grown to know and love. The characters are over the top, but authentic. The series ruptured with touchy topics including infidelity, independence and trust.

I hope that continually displaying real issues truthfully will start a shift towards us becoming better people. We realize how silly a situation/idea is when we are on the outside looking in, right?

Star Trek Into Darkness

Wondering if you should voyage to see Star Trek Into Darkness?

Zoe Saldana and Chris Pine were the reason I considered hopping aboard the Star Trek Enterprise and taking a trip with the crew. Don’t pretend that you have never been swayed by a hottie with a body!

Shallow reasoning aside, I actually liked the movie. The presence of a solid storyline (simple enough for non-Trekkies to follow, yet complicated enough to not be totally predictable), a script sprinkled with comedy and wrapped in a rugged bow of action, made it worthwhile. I wouldn’t go all crazy calling myself a Trekkie, but i’m a little interested in traveling to the past to delve into the series.

Curlformers & Deluxe Softhood Dryer Attachment (Review)

IMG_9210

On a mission to stray away from my signature high puff, I took the long and narrow Curlformers for a twirl. I applied them to the top of my head after washing and deep conditioning my hair. I slept in them overnight (not fun).

The following morning I removed them, check out the results in the first picture below.

At the end of day three, I took the pictures in the collage. I wore that style until Friday night without re-curling.  I am pleased with the results of Curlformers but the jury is still out on whether the time, discomfort and cost are worth it.

Applying Curlformers to the top of my head  took about 30-35 minutes.  I imagine that the process will speed up a little once I am comfortable using them.

I purchased the Deluxe Softhood Dryer Attachment for use with Curlformers to allow my hair to dry with low heat and save time. Unfortunately, the Softhood did not do the job. Heat should be evenly distributed but no heat/air was released from the top of my Softhood. I contacted Hairflair to notify them, a representative responded in a timely manner and offered to refund the item if I returned it. The Hairflair Quality Control team is supposed to inspect the unit, if I hear anything I’ll let you know.

My dryer attachment was purchased online at Curlformers.com. I snatched the long and narrow Curlformers online from Sally Beauty Supply . I am a Sally’s Beauty Club member, so I saved a few bucks. I bought individual packages because I received a discount, an additional 25 percent off coupon code and free shipping. I purchased a Holdall from the Curlformers site for storing. All items are designed by Hairflair.

Within in the next few weeks I plan to try Curlformers again but I want to avoid sleeping in them. I need to set enough time aside to allow them to dry during the day or get another hood type dryer.

Life of Pi

IMG_7688
Happy New Year! I rang it in at the movie theatre watching Life of Pi.

Did I like it? Yes! The film is literally gorgeous. I am not crazy about 3D, but this was pretty awesome. Aside from it being easy on the eyes, it had an incredible story to match. Fantasy or not, Pi’s journey is captivating and inspirational.

The fact that I could (unexpectedly) relate to many themes covered in the film reeled me. Struggle, faith, love, friendship, family, spirituality, travel and independence are all relevant themes in my life.

Starting this year watching Life of Pi was my first good decision of 2013. Stayed tuned as I share my journey.

Check out the Life of Pi theatrical trailer below.
