Mon Style: Travel-Friendly Casual Chic

IMG_7907

I heart this look – chic, classic and travel-approved. Comfy flats equal no foot pain. Crossbody bags with zippers provide pickpocket resistant storage.

Black, black and more black overflowed my luggage in prep for my #NYCsummerfling. Why? It camouflages potential sticky humidity dirt, Aunt Flo planned to travel with me, and it supported my recent all black mood. Also, black says: “I’m not a killer, but don’t push me.”

I sprinkled a little color with the footwear, lips and my (self-dubbed) big city blue nails.

Click the links below to get the look. Don’t be fooled by the labels, I purchased most items on S-A-L-E.

Being A Boss In Menswear-Inspired Shoes

IMG_9102

“Give a girl the right pair of shoes and she can conquer the world.” -Marilyn Monroe

Boss is the first word that comes to mind when I slide my feet in these menswear-inspired loafers. I kick ass and take names. Do I feel this way because I can work in them all day without worrying about my feet hurting? Not sure, but  the average flats do not have the same effect. The surge of power is cray… I feel as if I can conquer the world in them while wearing a Pampers Swaddler and Gerber onesie.

Winter’s Tale is not a love story.

Winter’s Tales is a guy-friendly chick flick about miracles and faith, not love. Movies released near Valentine’s Day typically have the “happily ever after” or “love sucks” ending, but Winter’s Tale surprisingly provided an alternative. If there is one thing I love as much as love, it’s a good freakin miracle.

Those impossible events that defy human power and scientific law bring me joy. Although it is not a love story, Winter’s Tale feeds your hunger for mushy love scenes (insert love struck emoji) and masculine battles.

Sophisticated Box Braid Updo (Bunning it up)

Braids have been in heavy rotation, because I decided to grow my tapered cut out (I want my hair back!).  Awkwardness of the awkward-length stage is more awkward when your hair is uneven, so braids have been my crutch.

Growing up, I believed that braids were not appropriate for sophisticated occasions, but it’s all in how you style them.  I attended a few events that required a fancy upgrade from the basic everyday top bun I wore.

The video above by Jennifer Olaleye inspired the braided bun i’m rocking below on the left. I added my own twist to the style by crossing a few braids from each side and clamping them with a thin metal barrette. Instead of wrapping the ponytail with hair (as shown in the tutorial), I used a hair tie for a more secure ponytail. I also used a rubber band to secure the final bun and a few bobby pins to hold the bun in place. Pictured on the right is an alternative to the braided bun, I created a regular bun by wrapping the hair in a circle, then pinned it in place.

Make sure that your braids are not pulling your hair, especially around the edges. Loosen hair as needed to stay alopecia free.

The Square is a Must See!

You know those experiences that you wish you could share with the entire world… the moments that you realize your thoughts and perceptions shift a little closer to awesome?

For the past few years the intervals between those moments have decreased. I’m such a grown up that it kind of scares me. Great big yawns are what I used to give when asked if I wanted to watch a documentary. When did I become the adult entertained, captivated and inspired by documentaries?

Maybe one day the documentary cupid shot me with its arrow. Anyway, The Square is a little piece of awesome that I urge you to experience. We often complain and wish for our situations to change, but fail to follow those wants with action.

The Square tells the story of young people creating change by banding together to claim their rights.  The movement is currently happening and the reality of their story is insane. Go check it out by Nov. 8 and see what can happen when people unite for a cause.

I had the opportunity to see it on Friday and participate in a Q & A with a few of the film makers and I am moved.

Vision Fulfilled! Revlon Run, done.

I love running. Sike! That’s a lie.

It’s been almost a year since I participated in my first race, the MB10K. I still struggle with running, but I notice improvement (when I’m consistent).

Why do I run?

1. The thought of needing a scooter chair scares me.

2. I would have died in The Hunger Games.

3. I have great friends that challenge me.

Since the MB10K, I’ve also completed The Color Run and Revlon Run. Guess what? I pasted the Revlon Run on my vision board over a year ago, before I did my first run. I read an article and decided I wanted to support the cause. Funny enough, my vision board sat behind my dresser (out of sight), so I kind of forgot about it.

When one of the ‘Be A Light’ circuit board members suggested that we participate, as one of our community outreach activities, I was down. It’s always great to see women supporting women. Oh! And I fulfilled one of my visions.

Aside from supporting a great cause, the run is cool because it finishes inside the LA Memorial Coliseum, to the sounds of adrenaline pumping drums. In my head, I finished an Olympic race.

Thanks for reading! xoxo
