Girl Boss Meets Classic Man

DSC_2069 DSC_2015 DSC_2056

If you’ve ever wondered who colors my hair, it’s all Melanie. She also did my big chop and a zillion other styles pre-big chop. We recently partnered (her hands, my head) to take a few hair shots to add to her portfolio.

Yes, she straighten my hair. No heat damage to report. Surprisingly, my hair remained straight ALL week. It typically reverts if you look at it too long.

To complete the requested look, I pulled items from my closet.

Beach waves, stripes and polka dots create a fun/stylish business look. I’ve dubbed this my Jidenna Look, it’s classic, man.

“People who love to eat are always the best people.” -Julia Child

Yes, Julia! My friendships are sealed and celebrated with food. I’m convinced that my friends workout to eat. Birthdays, job promotions, breakups, life chats, or new shoes… food is front and center for the celebration. Eating is a hobby.

I don’t subscribe to the “no new friends” motto, so my circle has a door. My friends are diverse, which makes for colorful foodie adventures.

One adventure landed us in Korea Town at EMC Seafood & Raw Bar (EMC). It happened to be the hot spot that Saturday night. The space is modern and ideal for groups, it’s pretty noisy and open late-nights.

We were seated at a long bar table. We opt for family-style group feasting. Our tasty spread included the items pictures, they are highlighted purple on the menu pages. Five of us dined that night and left happily stuffed. I predicted that the brussels sprouts and Uni pasta would be the weakest links. Wrong. They were delish and two of my fave dishes.

Awesome #EverydayWomen That Look Like Me

Awesome everyday women that look like me are too often unseen, therefore we think they are non-existent. I began the #EverydayWomen series to help dispel this myth and spotlight a few women that inspire me. On Instagram, I announced that I would run the series via Facebook from Nov. 25 – Dec. 25, 2014. The series would feature images of 30 awesome everyday women. Instead of 30, there are 31 everyday women featured and the series extended through January 1, 2015.

Science, technology, finance, arts/entertainment, government, health/beauty, military, and fashion are some of the career fields these women dabble in. Like countless women, most of these ladies wear multiple hats. While juggling the demands of their careers, several of these women are wives and/or mothers too.

Curl Popping Twist Out Tutorial

Three years ago (Sept. 2011) I went natural. I big chopped again last year (2013), right before my two-year naturalversary because I wanted a tapered cut. The first few years I avoided heated in my regular routine. Over the last few months, I have adopted blow drying because it minimizes my tangles and speeds up the drying process.

Step 1: Cleanse & Condition

For four weeks I have done apple cider vinegar (ACV) rinses in addition to the regular wash and condition. I am in the process of evicting pesky dandruff that is living rent-free on my scalp. I wash and condition once a week right now. I deep condition every other week.

Step 2: Blow Dry

I blow dry in sections on low heat and medium speed. 10784984_740260529363051_320441248_n

Step 3: Moisturize, Twist, & Seal.

I lightly oil my scalp with cold-pressed castor oil before twisting to help with eliminating the dandruff, then I begin the twisting process. In sections, I dampen my hair with water using the spay bottle, then apply my leave-in (avoiding application near the scalp). I gently rub in the leave-in until there is no visible residue. Next I apply a small amount of oil to the hair to seal in the moisture, then twist. Sometimes I twist and apply the sealer last. 10844227_321461368063450_1689997108_n

Step 4: Style

I aim to have my twists done by 6pm so that my hair is dry by morning. Dry twists and defined curls go hand in hand.  These days, I typically style my hair in a puff because it’s low maintenance and works for my lifestyle.10848212_793782650692146_708238981_n

Starfish Sushi is a cute little Japanese spot located in Miracle Mile, Los Angeles. The sushi is fresh and yummy. The service is good as well.

Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV), Rinse Away The Dandruff & Itchy Scalp

925072_790662034325642_278088663_n

These must be the new friends Drake referred to when he said, “No new friends”. Go! Away.

Before this year, I can not recall ever having an issue with dandruff. A few years ago, when I regularly visited the salon, my stylist would tell me to drink more water to avoid a dry scalp. Even then, I did not have a dandruff issue, just a dry scalp sometimes. Now knowing water’s importance to my overall health, I drink about 60oz per day, so that is not the issue. Why do I have dandruff?

Inspector Gadget to the rescue! Upon investigation I pinpointed my recent coffee addiction as a possible suspect. While getting my ends trimmed earlier this year, I asked the stylist if dandruff could be related to my coffee intake. I should tell you that I dislike coffee, so my “cup of coffee” by far contained more creamer than coffee. She said coffee and sugar could both be contributing to the problem.

After hearing that, I stopped adding creamer to my coffee. I switched to half and half, then for many reasons quit coffee at the end of August. I stepped down to a lower level drug called green tea, but I gave that up in October, yet my scalp is misbehaving again.

Time for more research! On Sunday I searched the interwebs for an answer. Dandruff is caused by an overproduction of Malassezia, a normal fungus on our scalps. At the end of this post I included links to articles I read about dandruff, its causes and remedies.

After self diagnosing myself with dandruff (possibly Eczema), not dry scalp, I decided to prescribe myself the most natural remedy. For four weeks I will complete apple cider vinegar (ACV) rinses once a week after shampooing, then following up with a deep condition.

10707033_565683790232210_1924797852_n

On Sunday I did the following…

1. Shampooed in four sections

2. Mixed one part (3 ounces) ACV with one part (3 ounces) warm water into a spray bottle

3. In sections I sprayed my scalp with the mixture (See    LiveNaturallyLove‘s  “How to do a Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse” below for a visual)

4. Let it sit on scalp for ten minutes after massaging it in

5. Rinsed out the mixture

6. Deep conditioned hair for 3o minutes

Here’s how my scalp looked after.
