When I was a young girl
I had visions of fame
They were wild and they were free
They were blessed with my name…
I L.O.V.E. that song!
Anyway, one of my visions included attending Spelman College and stomping across campus chanting “Oo-ooop!” with the Delta’s or “Skee wee!” with the AKA’s. None of that happened. I missed the undergrad pledge opportunity, but at the end of 2011, I kind of joined a sorority called the natural hair movement.
I imagine the sisterhood, empowerment and bonding is pretty similar to a sorority. Don’t burst my bubble! (insert side eye)
Last month, my friend Angela hosted about two handfuls of her curlfriends for an au naturale girls day. It included girl talk, bonding, motivation, hair makeovers, sharing tips, a product exchange, yummy healthy food and adult refreshments.
I thoroughly enjoyed the experience (minus sitting under the dryer) and gained a few new curlfriends. Good times!
Check out the photos below.

Curly Cartel, a community created to encourage women to embrace their natural beauty, held its first event on March 3, 2013. The event, hosted by creators Miss Dunnie O and Ms. J Gray, was held at Confidential Beverly Hills and featured notable natural hair/beauty panelists, food and beauty vendors.
Overall, I’d say the event was a success. More than 100 women with different curl patterns, shapes, sizes and backgrounds were provided a positive space to experience, learn and grow.
Attendees were able to get answers to puzzling questions, while snacking on tasty treats and receiving complimentary mini makeovers.
Between stuffing my face with “Healthy Bites” and “Signature Sweets”, I had the pleasure of meeting Miss Dunnie O, Dr. Kari Williams (Mahogany Revolution), Chef Ameera (chefameera), Chef Vita Love (chefameera), Ashley Blaine Featherson (Actress), Tia Muhammad (Neon Pink Magazine), Rosalyn Lockhart (Fierce Phaces), Ferriss Mason (UrbnVntg) and a new curlfriend Corene.
Check out the photos below and feel free to ask questions. Oh! And I recommend you try the following…
1. Chef Ameera‘s kale salad and roasted herb & veggie quinoa
2. Strawberry Kouture‘s cheesecake covered strawberry
3. Creole Primas‘ chocolate cake pop

-Finger detangle hair by section (I created 6 sections) using a small amount of water (apply water using a spray bottle) followed by Cantu Shea Butter (avoid adding moisture at the root to minimize shrinkage)
-After detangling a section, add a little more Cantu Shea Butter making sure that all strands are coated (give your ends a little extra love)
-Two-strand twist the section and continue the process until each section is twisted
-Allow twists to COMPLETELY dry
-Once twists are dry, add a small amount of light oil (I used coconut oil) to your finger tips to avoid frizz while separating twists
-Separate the twists from the root, then separate the subsequent sections (one twist becomes 4 sections)
-Use a pic at the roots of your hair to create volume
*If you are not satisfied, continue to separated sections and pic until you achieve desired volume & look
On a mission to stray away from my signature high puff, I took the long and narrow Curlformers for a twirl. I applied them to the top of my head after washing and deep conditioning my hair. I slept in them overnight (not fun).
The following morning I removed them, check out the results in the first picture below.
At the end of day three, I took the pictures in the collage. I wore that style until Friday night without re-curling. I am pleased with the results of Curlformers but the jury is still out on whether the time, discomfort and cost are worth it.
Applying Curlformers to the top of my head took about 30-35 minutes. I imagine that the process will speed up a little once I am comfortable using them.
I purchased the Deluxe Softhood Dryer Attachment for use with Curlformers to allow my hair to dry with low heat and save time. Unfortunately, the Softhood did not do the job. Heat should be evenly distributed but no heat/air was released from the top of my Softhood. I contacted Hairflair to notify them, a representative responded in a timely manner and offered to refund the item if I returned it. The Hairflair Quality Control team is supposed to inspect the unit, if I hear anything I’ll let you know.
My dryer attachment was purchased online at Curlformers.com. I snatched the long and narrow Curlformers online from Sally Beauty Supply . I am a Sally’s Beauty Club member, so I saved a few bucks. I bought individual packages because I received a discount, an additional 25 percent off coupon code and free shipping. I purchased a Holdall from the Curlformers site for storing. All items are designed by Hairflair.
Within in the next few weeks I plan to try Curlformers again but I want to avoid sleeping in them. I need to set enough time aside to allow them to dry during the day or get another hood type dryer.
