#UltimateCurlboxMeetup at St. Jude’s Give Thanks Walk

When I lift my legs, I expect one foot to move in front of the other. Walking is just as natural as breathing and I have been doing it for twenty-something years. Being unable to walk is unfathomable to me. As I walked/ran at St. Jude’s #givethankswalk I took time to appreciate how blessed I am.

10802854_681749248598870_1601233490_nSt. Jude caters to children suffering from cancer and catastrophic diseases, it’s a pediatric treatment and research facility. Curlbox is a natural hair subscription service that allows curly girls to discover new products every month, for a fraction of the retail cost. St. Jude and Curlbox partnered to created the Ultimate Curlbox Meetup at St. Jude’s Give Thanks Walk.

Scrolling through my Instagram timeline I stumbled across the image promoting the event and jumped on the opportunity. Raising awareness of such a worthy cause, exercising and meeting new curl friends? Win, win and win!

IMG_0987The 5K walk went through Paramount Pictures studios. Three laps around equaled 5K. Since I have so much to be thankful for, I completed two extra laps. The last lap included multiple dance breaks with team captain Nikia and her friend Alexis (not sure if the spelling is correct), so awesome! Seeing so many curlies out there made me smile real big.

All Los Angeles Ultimate Curlbox Meetup participants received swags bags filled with these Carol’s Daughter goodies. Score! Curlbox raised more than $17,000 for the cause and united multiple groups of women together all across the country. AMAZING!

I’m Weak! Help me work it out.

Photo on 6-18-13 at 8.09 PM

Hi Guys!

I’m weak at consistently working out. Fitness is not my area of strength, I think that’s because my super genes allow me to look like a healthy 13 year old, without exercising.

If you follow kinkycurlsla on Instagram, you saw the video of my work kitchen. If not, imagine walking into a room filled with chips, donuts, pastries, candy bars, soda and pretty much anything else you can think of.

For the entire month of August, I have vowed not to touch the bad stuff.

Eating clean is a huge part of being fit, I hear that it’s actually more important than exercising.

In an effort to do better,  I also joined a once-a-week running club with my co-workers. Having a group to hold me accountable keeps me motivated. I’m resurrecting my ab workout dvd too. Hiking and climbing the stairs will happen when possible.

My goal is to create a realistic fitness plan and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Do you have a plan/goal? If so, what is it? We can help hold one another accountable.

Thanks for reading! xoxo

Street Food Cinema Summer Fun

List five places that are date appropriate, girls night fitting, kid approved, fido friendly, foodie pleasing and entertaining all-in-one. Oh! And cost 10 bucks to enter. Don’t worry, I’ll wait.

Are you still thinking? I have one for you, Street Food Cinema (SFC)!

The Street Food Cinema experience travels throughout Los Angeles this summer from May 25-August 31 providing an awesome summer fun destination that includes movies, live music and food trucks.

On June 20, Mean Girls was projected on the SFC (40 feet wide by 22 feet high) screen at Poinsettia Park and I attended.

Before the movie, guests rocked to Elle Rae while mingling and standing in vendor and food truck lines. I grabbed mini donuts from The Fry Girl truck, then firecracker wings and bomb dust fries from the Belly BombZ truck.

The mini donuts and bomb dust fries were tasty, but the firecracker wings did not evoke sparks. I waited about an hour in the Belly BombZ line, the wings were not worth it and prices were deceptively raised.

Enough about that, guests competed in a Mean Girls Look Alike/Sound Alike contest to win a 76 gas card and a gift bag of goodies, it was pretty entertaining. Two thumbs up for the Street Food Cinema experience.

Next time, I plan to take advantage of outside food and beverages being permitted. A nice glass of wine with a movie? Why not!

For more information and to view the schedule, visit Street Food Cinema. I hear that free tickets are given away to @stfoodcinema followers on Twitter and Instagram.

As always, thanks for reading and feel free to ask questions. xoxo

My Curly-Haired Daughter Wants Straight “Yellow” Hair!

What would you do if your little curly-haired daughter, sister, niece or cousin cried desperately asking for straight “yellow” hair?

One mother, Nicole Updegraff, decided to search for a book as back up for the conversation she would have with her daughter. Unfortunately, she did not find a book with the message she wanted to impart.

From the void, I LOVE my Cotton Candy Hair was born. I LOVE my Cotton Candy Hair is a love letter written by Nicole to teach her 3-year-old daughter that she is absolutely perfect just the way she is. How awesome is that?

The story is ideal for children ages 3 to 8, but this twenty-something year old (me) is captivated. I LOVE my Cotton Candy Hair crosses, age, gender and racial barriers and unites us all for a fun journey that promotes self-love. The narrator, Charlie, shares cool facts about her hair. She also brings her family and friends along by showing us the different beautiful hair colors and styles they wear.

Nicole said, “I LOVE my Cotton Candy Hair rhymes its way into your heart,” it has crawled inside mine and buried itself.

Guess what? Aside from the love story, Nicole and her Cotton Candy Playground will be launching a kids apparel line, really SOON! Take a sneak peek at a few designs below. Great designs with even better messages.

Enter for a chance to win a copy of I LOVE my Cotton Candy Hair and a “I LOVE my Cotton Candy Hair” tee, for someone special. Details are posted under “giveaways” click here

Visit Cotton Candy Playground to check out the previously mention goodies and more! Follow @cottoncandyniki on twitter and @cottoncandyplayground on Instagram to connect and stay in the loop.

Feel free to ask any questions and thanks for reading. xoxo
