Chaya is Life, Literally! #Mouthgasm

IMG_8264

Mushroom soup (Soup of the Day)

Before Chaya, mouthgasms over sushi puzzled me. At the extremely mature age of twelve there were many things I vowed to NEVER EVER eat, on that scroll you could find sushi somewhere near the top.

A few years back, a friend kidnapped me and decided that I would eat sushi that night. We went to a little spot in Los Angeles. Tempura roll, please! I carried on determined not to eat anything raw. Somehow a spicy tuna roll crept into my mouth and made it down my throat, not too bad. Boom! I ate sushi.

After that night I ate sushi over a handful of times at multiple eateries, but it never induced a mouthgasm until Chaya. Nom nom (freakin) NOM! Sooo yummy and melted in my mouth. Talking about it is making me hungry.

Aside from good eats, including the delicious mushroom soup, Chaya provided superb service. Nothing compliments a great meal more than awesome service. The relaxed and upscale ambiance added a nice touch.

One more thing… a fun fact.  Chaya means life in Hebrew. Go, figure! That night Chaya gave birth to a sushi lover. I am corny, sue me.

MegaGrowth & Ebony.com Host Poolside Beauty Chat

TJ8C2557Felicia Leatherwood (celebrity natural hair stylist), Kissa Starr (buttaflyunltd), Valeka Holt, Delali Kpodzo (We Are Onyx) and I

Growing up, my definition of beauty was heavily influenced by media standards. I failed to embrace the differences that make us unique. My ignorance helped to create a perception that dictated my behavior and interactions.

Today, I am proud to celebrate images and attributes that I found embarrassing and/or bashed. Embracing my own natural beauty has changed my perspective and is one of the best choices I have ever made.

Honored to be part of this amazing movement, I love opportunities to connect with other amazing women redefining beauty.

On Thursday night, natural hair and beauty bloggers/editors gathered at the upscale Sofitel Los Angeles for a beauty chat hosted by MegaGrowth and Ebony.com. I had a blast chatting about hair care, makeup, fitness and philanthropy with those in attendance.

Guests enjoyed delicious gourmet hors d’ oeuvres, complimentary drinks and received MegaGrowth swags bags. The summer inspired beach totes included three full-sized products that smell yummy. Look out for a review.

Check out MegaGrowth.com for product details.

Suck My Garlic!

Looks familiar? Yes, it’s The Stinking Rose, again.

If you read what happened during the first visit, then you know why we doubled back.

After being seated, the restaurant’s general manager came over to greet us. He is very sweet and super attentive. Guess who popped up next? Our amazing server from the last visit.

Unlike last time, we ordered stinking entrees from the “favorites”. The Stinking Rose can feed me garlic drenched food (not ice cream) anytime.

Stuffed and traumatized from the garlic ice cream experience we decided to skip dessert. Against our will, the server brought out a complimentary dessert. We had to try it right? Hesitantly, we spooned a small taste and we approved this creamy goodness.

If you ever get hungry while running from vampires, tell them to suck your garlic after you stop by The Stinking Rose. Kill to birds with one stone.

Tyler Perry’s The Haves & the Have Nots and Love Thy Neighbor

Fascinated with BFFs Tyler Perry and Oprah’s new partnership, I’ve patiently waited to check out the new projects on OWN.

Last week, I attended the press party for both series. The event, held at SLS Beverly Hills, featured brief teasers and a Q & A session with cast members. Forthcoming with behind the scenes deets, the casts seemed genuinely excited about their respective shows, so I eagerly awaited the air dates.

Yesterday, I watched the first two episodes of both shows and i’m ready to share my thoughts.

The Haves and the Have Nots is both Tyler and Oprah’s first drama. The premiere episodes definitely brought a boat load of drama. The issues are real and relevant, but there is a soap opera feel to the show.

At the press party cast members emphasized how this drama is much different from soaps that they previously worked on. As a viewer, that boundary is not so clear. I’m curious to see how the show progresses.

As for the comedy,  Love Thy Neighbor, it is the signature Tyler Perry that fans have grown to know and love. The characters are over the top, but authentic. The series ruptured with touchy topics including infidelity, independence and trust.

I hope that continually displaying real issues truthfully will start a shift towards us becoming better people. We realize how silly a situation/idea is when we are on the outside looking in, right?

Curly Cartel

Curly Cartel, a community created to encourage women to embrace their natural beauty, held its first event on March 3, 2013. The event, hosted by creators Miss Dunnie O and Ms. J Gray, was held at Confidential Beverly Hills and featured notable natural hair/beauty panelists, food and beauty vendors.

Overall, I’d say the event was a success. More than 100 women with different curl patterns, shapes, sizes and backgrounds were provided a positive space to experience, learn and grow.

Attendees were able to get answers to puzzling questions, while snacking on tasty treats and receiving complimentary mini makeovers.

Between stuffing my face with “Healthy Bites” and “Signature Sweets”, I had the pleasure of meeting Miss Dunnie O, Dr. Kari Williams (Mahogany Revolution), Chef Ameera (chefameera), Chef Vita Love (chefameera), Ashley Blaine Featherson (Actress), Tia Muhammad (Neon Pink Magazine), Rosalyn Lockhart (Fierce Phaces), Ferriss Mason (UrbnVntg) and a new curlfriend Corene.

Check out the photos below and feel free to ask questions. Oh! And I recommend you try the following…

1. Chef Ameera‘s kale salad and roasted herb & veggie quinoa

2. Strawberry Kouture‘s cheesecake covered strawberry

3. Creole Primas‘  chocolate cake pop

Throw It On: Style With Lo

While driving through Beverly Hills on Tuesday, a red light interrupted my mission. As I sat at the light I decided to people watch. There were so many clothes wearing people that I should call it “clothes watching”.

The price for a single top or pair of pumps could easily feed a small village, yet some looked no different than their less expensive competitors. Don’t get me wrong, I love my luxury brands just as much as the next girl. I know that quality is a factor but some items just don’t fit the bill.

I also know that an inexpensive item can shame an expensive one. We can purchase a $1,000 top, but if we don’t have style it can be mistaken for a 99 cent item from the discount store.

Style is what brings clothing to life, it’s the difference between wearing your clothes and letting them wear you.

I want to introduce you to Lo, she has great personal style. Let’s check out how she throws it on. Read the Q & A below to find out how she does it and connect with her.

Describe yourself in one sentence.

Lo: One open-minded, adventurous, strong, funny, and intelligent female with a slight male demeanor.

Who/what inspires your personal style?

Lo: I wouldn’t say that there is anyone or anything in particular that inspires my personal style. How I am feeling, my mood is what inspires me.

What is your favorite piece and/or accessory right now?

Lo: My boyfriend cut destroyed denim jeans. I can dress them up or dress them down. I can throw on a colorful pump or rock a pair of retro Jordan’s with them. They are so comfortable and I love comfort.

Would you like to share anything else about you or your personal style?

Lo: I never thought I really had “style”. I simply just buy what I like and throw it on.

Connect with Lo on Instagram and Twitter, both handles are @MyLifeAsLo

Farewell, Grand Lux Cafe

Grand Lux Cafe, Los Angeles opened its doors to customers for the last time on March 19.  A couple good peeps and I visited on March 15 to say our final farewell.

My first visit in 2004/2005 with a party of about 20 people is a blur, but I remember tasting three dishes that all seemed very bland. Honestly, the only reason I went on March 15  is because my friend suggested it. This was my second visit. I ordered the Cedar Planked B.B.Q. Salmon, i’m still not sold on the food. On the other hand, I would go back just for the fresh baked box of cookies.

The price of our entrees ranged from $19-$23 and the servings were pretty big. All in all, the experience was favorable and our server was great.

Have you dined at Grand Lux? If so, what is your experience?

Below are pictures of our food and drinks followed by details.

The Stinking Rose

Do you see the Chicken and Asparagus dish? I ate that this past weekend at The Stinking Rose, it was yummy to my tummy. The other dish pictured is the Shellfish pasta ($24.95).

The ambiance is perfect for date night but it’s also suitable for a chill night with your girls or guy friends. The menu offers reasonable and high priced dishes. Our sever was very attentive, friendly, helpful and unobtrusive. We left a 20 percent tip, so you know it was real.

All went well with the exception of the garlic ice cream. Sometimes, I try really really hard not to judge a book by its cover and this was one of those times. Garlic ice cream is a no-no for my palate.

Check out the pictures below and feel free to ask any questions.

P.s. I forgot to take pics of the Bagna Calda and bread before we dug in. Those servings were not measly, pictured are the remnants.
