Mushroom soup (Soup of the Day)

Before Chaya, mouthgasms over sushi puzzled me. At the extremely mature age of twelve there were many things I vowed to NEVER EVER eat, on that scroll you could find sushi somewhere near the top.

A few years back, a friend kidnapped me and decided that I would eat sushi that night. We went to a little spot in Los Angeles. Tempura roll, please! I carried on determined not to eat anything raw. Somehow a spicy tuna roll crept into my mouth and made it down my throat, not too bad. Boom! I ate sushi.

After that night I ate sushi over a handful of times at multiple eateries, but it never induced a mouthgasm until Chaya. Nom nom (freakin) NOM! Sooo yummy and melted in my mouth. Talking about it is making me hungry.

Aside from good eats, including the delicious mushroom soup, Chaya provided superb service. Nothing compliments a great meal more than awesome service. The relaxed and upscale ambiance added a nice touch.

One more thing… a fun fact.  Chaya means life in Hebrew. Go, figure! That night Chaya gave birth to a sushi lover. I am corny, sue me.

My Shrimpy Pesto Pizza Birthday

IMG_7077There are two kinds of people in the world: Birthday people and not birthday people. Until 2011, I never worked on my birthday. Of course, I am a birthday person and typically make it multi-day celebration of moi.

This year, instead of organizing a party/events, I had a pretty chill birthday. I like big celebrations, but not coordinating people is pretty awesome. I lived in the moment and enjoyed my day sans stress.

On Friday I received these gorgeous flowers (pictured below) from my man. On Saturday (my actual birthday) he cooked us breakfast, then I went to the nail salon for more pampering, later he took me to dinner at Soleto.  We ordered Shrimp Pesto Pizza and Chicken Fettuccine. I tend to prefer pasta over pizza, but not in this case. Pizza ingredient (garlic shrimp, basil pesto, mozzarella, grana padano, sundried tomatoes, peppers) proportions were great and the pizza crust… not too soft, not too crispy, but just right. It tastes just as delicious as it looks. The pasta did not do anything for me, nothing (flavor, ingredients, presentation) stood out. Pasta and service were both 7, on a scale of  1-10. More Shrimp Pesto Pizza, per favore!

Happy Hour at Engine Co. No. 28

Engine Co. No. 28 has a pretty decent Happy Hour from 2-10pm, seven days a week. Menu items are 5 bucks each. The meatloaf sliders were my fave of the three dishes pictured above. The chili has cubed chunks of beef, I prefer ground meat chili on chili cheese fries.
